Queensland Government guidance recommends inspecting decks at least annually. Exposure and the finish system affect maintenance needs, so there is no single month when every Gold Coast deck must be oiled.

Before the busy season

Book any overdue professional inspection. Note loose boards, movement or rail concerns before entertaining. Plan furniture moves and access before restoration work.

After heavy rain

When safe, note standing water, slow drying and debris. Ask for advice if areas stay damp or damage becomes visible. Surface cleaning does not establish structural safety.

Before coating

Identify the timber and previous product. Confirm the preparation and weather window using the selected product instructions. Ask about repairs before new coating.

At the next review

Photograph the same areas again. Compare wear, flaking and colour change. Follow the product maintenance instructions rather than repeatedly coating over a problem.

These are suggested review prompts, not a prescribed treatment schedule. Your contractor and product instructions should determine treatment and frequency.

Your deck care checklist

Start with what you can safely see.

Record the timber and last coating product, where known. Keep the last quote, product instructions and job photographs. Look for visible changes in boards, rails and fixings. Note areas that remain wet or collect debris. Keep routine cleaning compatible with the existing finish. Arrange professional advice for suspected rot, movement or corrosion. Compare exposed areas with covered areas before deciding to recoat. Record the next professional inspection or product review date.
