Does your deck need sanding?
Sanding and cleaning solve different problems. The decision should start with the timber, the coating already on it and the condition of the boards. A sound, compatible surface may need maintenance preparation rather than a complete sand.
What a sanding quote should explain
- Which floor areas, edges, stairs and detailed sections are included.
- How the previous coating will be identified and removed or prepared.
- Which repairs and fixing checks need to happen first.
- How dust and nearby glass, pools, gardens and adjoining property will be managed.
- What final preparation the selected coating manufacturer requires.
Cleaning, sanding or repairs first?
Flaking or incompatible coatings need a preparation plan. Soft boards, loose rails or movement need assessment before a cosmetic finish is considered. Do not sand over a suspected structural problem and assume it has been repaired.

Questions to ask before sanding
Does every deck need a complete sand?
No. Ask for an assessment of the existing coating and timber. A full sand, light preparation and cleaning are different scopes.
Can sanding fix soft or moving boards?
No. Surface preparation cannot establish structural condition or repair hidden deterioration. Arrange an appropriate assessment first.
